What is Local SEO and Who Needs It

Local SEO is the optimization of a website to appear in search results for geographically bound queries: "cafe London", "dentist NY", "car repair near me". Google shows such results in a special "Google Maps" and "Local Pack" block — three companies with a map at the top of the page.

If you have a physical location or serve a specific city or region, local SEO is mandatory. Restaurants, beauty salons, medical clinics, law firms, repair services, shops are all potential clients of local search.

Google Business Profile: The Foundation of Local SEO

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free tool that determines how your company is displayed in Google Maps and local search results.

Setting up the profile:

  1. Go to business.google.com and create or verify a profile
  2. Fill in all fields: name, address, phone, website, opening hours
  3. Choose the right primary category (e.g. "Dental clinic")
  4. Add additional categories where appropriate
  5. Upload at least 10 high-quality photos: facade, interior, product/service, team
  6. Verify your profile (postcard or video call)
💡 NAP Consistency

NAP (Name, Address, Phone) — the name, address, and phone number must be identical on your website, in the Google Business Profile, and in all other online directories. Even the difference between "St." and "Street" can lower your rankings.

Reviews — The Most Important Factor

Google shows companies with a large number of fresh positive reviews significantly higher in the local pack. Reviews also affect CTR — most people choose a company with a 4.5+ rating from 100 reviews, not 5.0 from 3 reviews.

  • Ask satisfied customers to leave reviews — in person, via SMS, or email
  • Reply to all reviews, especially negative ones — it's a signal of activity
  • Never buy fake reviews — Google bans for this
  • New reviews are more important than old ones: 5 reviews in the last month > 50 reviews in a year

Keywords for Local SEO

Local queries have a characteristic structure:

  • [service] + [city] → "manicure NY", "lawyer London"
  • [service] + "near me" → "pharmacy near me"
  • [service] + district → "restaurant Soho", "cafe Brooklyn"
  • Street or landmark → "dentist near central station"

Add these keywords to: title and H1 of the homepage, description in the Google Business Profile, service content pages, and image alt tags.

Service and Location Pages

If your business is present in several cities or districts, create a separate page for each location:

  • Unique content for each city — don't just replace the city name
  • Embedded Google map with your location
  • Local photos — building, street, staff
  • Schema.org LocalBusiness with exact data
{ "@context": "https://schema.org", "@type": "LocalBusiness", "name": "Company Name", "address": { "@type": "PostalAddress", "streetAddress": "вул. Хрещатик, 1", "addressLocality": "Київ", "addressCountry": "UA" }, "telephone": "+380441234567", "openingHours": "Mo-Fr 09:00-18:00", "geo": { "@type": "GeoCoordinates", "latitude": "50.4501", "longitude": "30.5234" } }

Accelerate Indexing of Local Pages

New service and location pages need to get into Google as quickly as possible. IndexFast sends them via the Google Indexing API — results in a few hours.

Local Directories and Citations

Listing the company in online directories improves local SEO by building "citations" — mentions of your NAP on the Internet:

  • Yelp, YellowPages, TripAdvisor, Foursquare
  • Industry directories (for medicine, law, construction)
  • Local media and city portals
  • Marketplaces (if you sell goods)
